SUMMARY:Classic Balkan Dances: Workshop with Judy Silver
DESCRIPTION:Dance instructor Judy Silver\n\n\n\nJUDY SILVER teaches classic folk dances from Macedonia and Bulgaria at this fun workshop in Brooklyn Heights.  \n\n\n\nJudy has taught international folk dancing in the Toronto area since 1973. She focuses on the “oldies” – classic dances from the Balkans\, Eastern Europe\, Israel\, and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nFor decades\, Judy has co-run the Toronto International Folk Dance Club’s weekly in-person class\, and she founded Village Folk Ensemble\, a well-regarded performance troupe. \n\n\n\nDuring the COVID pandemic\, Judy started a highly-successful weekly virtual folk dance group that is still ongoing. She has also led dancing for various US & Canadian virtual dance groups. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments provided. SUMMARY:Danny Pollock - Israeli Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Come and dance! Admission: $20\, light refreshments available.Instruction begins promptly at 7pm. Arrive early to register.\n\n\nDanny Pollock\, our guest instructor\, has been teaching and performing Israeli folk dance throughout the NY Metropolitan area and beyond for more than four decades. Danny has led and continues to lead folk dance sessions\, workshops\, and special programs for children and adults of all ages\, including special needs populations. \nDanny has served on staff at major folk dance camps\, including Hora Keff and Mainewoods\, and also served as Dance Assistant to the Director of NY’s Annual Israel Folk Dance Festival for many years. After graduating from the National School of Folk Arts in Shiroka Lŭka\, Bulgaria\, he performed for three years with the Sliven Folk Dance and Music Ensemble. In 1984 he founded the orchestra Sopot. In 1985 he formed the wedding-music ensemble Rozova Dolina\, and in 1992 the prize-winning ensemble Balkanski Glasove. In 1994 and 1995 the latter group took first prizes at the Varna Festival. Nikolay has accompanied many well-known singers including Vŭlkana Stojanova\, Roumen Rodopski\, and Todor Kozhuharov. In 1999\, Nikolay was the first Bulgarian to be recognized by the Slavic Heritage Council of America for his outstanding contributions to music.\n~~~~~\nDonka Koleva is a vocalist prized for her rich\, clear and melodic voice. A graduate of the Folklore High School in Shiroka Luka\, she worked as a soloist with the Sliven Ensemble for three years. She then directed the chorus of the Sopot Ensemble\, and soloed with the wedding band Rozova Dolina.\nIn 1994\, Donka started recording with the National Radio and Television in Bulgaria. In 1997\, her recording of “Javore” was song of the year. Since she moved to U.S. in 1995\, she has taught and performed traditional and arranged songs from Bulgarian Thrace and the Rhodopes at Balkan camps on both coasts. She has taught many workshops and private lessons across the U.S. and Canada to well-known singing groups such as Kitka\, Planina\, Chubritza\, Mila\, and others.\nDonka graduated from the Musical Folklore High School in Shiroka Luka. She has been a featured soloist on Bulgarian Radio and Television. Since emigrating to the U.S. in 1995\, Donka and her husband Nikolay Kolev have played an active role in fostering Bulgarian music across the country. Based in Wisconsin\, they teach workshops in their respective fields and perform solo\, together\, and with their ensemble Cherven Traktor.\n~~~~~\nMichael Ginsburg and Belle Birchfield are accomplished musicians on traditional instruments\, and dance instructors. They run Balkan Cafe offering live music on Wednesday evenings at Hungarian House.

DESCRIPTION:JAAP LEEGWATER  with Filip Filipov on accordion \nAdmission: $20 \n\n\n\nJaap Leegwater will lead in-depth instruction for simple\, intermediate\, and more complex dances brought back from Bulgaria! Filip Filipov accompanies on accordion. On tour from Denmark and Holland. Bring your water bottle and dancing shoes! Biography Filip Filipov started playing folk music at a very young age as a tâpan player in the folk orchestra of his father. Late he worked as accordionist with the dance ensemble in Varna\, Bulgaria and its choreographer Belčo Stanev. He recorded for Tiankov TV\, has made 3 CD’s and has an extensive experience as “co-repetitor” playing live for dancers\, which he especially enjoys. Jaap is a professional dancer and instructor\, specializing in Bulgarian dance. He has spent a huge part of his life travelling in Bulgaria\, studying the dances\, the songs\, and the history behind them.
